Thank you for your initial interest in volunteering with us! Since there are many levels of involvement, and we want you to have an experience worth your time, carefully consider what interests you and your comfort level in working with our participants. Respect for the privacy and safety of our participants is important, so opportunities may not be exactly what you might think. Please view the ways to get involved below. We look forward to you joining our volunteer team to fight homelessness.
Year-Round Opportunities
Celebration Events
Birthday Candles and our annual Back-to-School Celebration are volunteer opportunities for you to engage with our participants in a special way.
Everyone’s birthday is important, but we believe that no child should ever have the experience of their birthday being forgotten or go without celebrating the day of their birth. So, each quarter we have a birthday party to collectively celebrate each child born in a month during that quarter. Each child is welcomed to invite their immediate family and one friend to the party. The event is called Birthday Candles and is for kids ages 1-16.
Our annual Back-to-School Celebration is an opportunity for our partners to help economically disadvantaged children have a great start to their schoolyear. With our mission partners we serve over 1,300 children and youth in Dallas ISD. At this special carnival-like event, children from our housing programs and area shelters enjoy a fun afternoon of games, activities, and refreshments. The day concludes with each child/youth receiving a new backpack filled with school supplies and a new school uniform to start off the new school year!
If you would like to help make these special celebrations a success, please contact Deborah Jones at 469.250.1952 or sign up here.
Legal Clinic Attorney
If you are an attorney, or a law school professor, and would like to make an immediate impact, please consider volunteering with our legal clinic. It’s a commitment of a few hours on one evening. The goals of our workshops are to prevent homelessness through offering free legal advice and direction and educate tenants of their rights and responsibilities. Clinics are held every second and fourth Wednesday of the month at our Homepoint main office. Even if tenant/landlord disputes or real estate law are outside of your area of practice, we would appreciate and can use your help. Homepoint partners with Legal Aid of North West Texas (LANWT) and the Dallas Volunteer Attorney Program (DVAP). To learn more please email Deborah Jones at [email protected] or click here to see opportunities to help. Our legal program has been cited by the State Bar of Texas for outstanding service.
Phone Receptionist
Do you have extra time and can communicate information clearly and concisely? Volunteers are needed to simply answer phone lines at our main office. Volunteer training would prepare you to share information and refer callers to community resources. Contact Deborah Jones at 469.250.1952 or [email protected] if this interests you. Volunteer training and a background check required!
Legal Clinic Aid
You can imagine the amount of paperwork necessary to help tenants fight for their rights, and deal with legal issues. Occasionally, volunteers are needed to help with administrative tasks and or hospitality for our legal clinics. The goal of the session is to prevent homelessness through offering free legal advice and direction. Clinics are held every second and fourth Wednesday of the month at our Homepoint main office. To volunteer as an aid, please contact Deborah Jones at 469.250.1952 or [email protected].
Organize an Item Drive
If you have the ability and resources to organize a donation drive, we are always in need of specific items. Contact Holly Puskarich at 469.828.3643 or [email protected] to discuss how you can help and receive a list of our current needs.
Workshops or Life Skills
In addition to housing, Homepoint provides support services to empower participants to never have to experience homelessness again. If you would like to assist with, or have the ability to teach helpful skills like “preparing quick and easy meals”, “coupon shopping and budgeting”, “healthy eating on a budget”, etc., please contact Deborah Jones at 469.250.1952 or [email protected]. Volunteer training and a background check required!
Special Opportunities
P.I.T. Count (Point In Time Count) Volunteer
Once a year, we join communities across the country to count our homeless friends. The Count, which is a requirement under Federal Law, helps communities understand the extent of homelessness, the changing trends, and the measure of their success in making homelessness rare, brief and nonrecurring. While this opportunity is not for everyone, it takes thousands of volunteers to make it happen. To join our teams for the count, contact Deborah Jones at 469.250.1952 or [email protected] for more information.
Community Service Hours
By the nature of what we do, opportunities for student or adult volunteers seeking community service hours are limited. However, volunteers are needed for various activities within our organization throughout the year. Occasionally, volunteers are also needed to work more directly with our participants through various services that we provide within our programs. Contact Deborah Jones at 469.250.1952 or [email protected] if this interests you or you have questions. Volunteer training and a background check may be required!
